It mixes suspense, humor, politics and romance and offers a boldly honest examination of both Islamic and secular values. A thrilling investigation into modern Turkish culture, Snow tells the story of a poet named Ka who finds himself trapped in the eastern city of Kars. It’s probably best appreciated after having spent a few wintry months in the city. The first, Istanbul: Memories and the City, is a haunting memoir in which Pamuk recalls his youth and shares melancholy impressions of his hometown. I read three of his novels while in Istanbul, and enjoyed them so much that I’ll probably continue working through his canon.
